Savoy Brown – Shake Down (1967)

Posted on October 22, 2020

This album by Savoy Brown is one that came through my suggestions on Apple Music recently, and I’m pretty stoked to give it a listen. The band was a blues rock outfit from London, which featured a few musicians who ended up joining different bands like Foghat and Fleetwood Mac. This seems pretty sweet, so I’m going to go ahead and jump on into the music.
“Ain’t It Superstitious” starts out with some super tasty blues guitars and a classic rollicking bluesy piano that keeps hooking me more into the song. Oh wow, this tune is pretty groovy, with a whole bunch of patient blues rock flavor. Oh wow, the guitar parts and drum beat all have such a steady feel to them, like they’re moving along the tune with a massive weight behind them, all while the rollicking bluesy piano seemingly plays with that weight effortlessly. Oh wow, this lead guitar riff is super tasty and really hollers on into the soundscape with a bunch of great flavor. Holy smokes, this tune is super tasty, I’m stoked for the rest of the album.
“Let Me Love You Baby” starts out super hot with some fast paced blues rock guitar shredding, reminiscent of Eric Clapton and Cream’s “Killing Floor”. Oh wow, the different instruments are going back in forth in a super flavorful way. Oh wow, this tune is really rockin’ nicely. This is some classic blues rock if I’ve ever heard it. Wow, these are some super groovy bluesy sounds. Great tune.
“Black Night” starts out relatively gently with some solo guitar that gently distorts throughout the soundscape, with other instruments coming on to accentuate the beat for a moment and then they all sort of roll on into the soundscape. The tone of the guitar and even general mixing of the soundscape reminds me a lot of John Mayer and his trio, but the tune itself seems to have a bit more old fashioned bluesy weight to it than I’m familiar with in his songs. Oh wow, I really dig the sliding electric guitar, which sort of pulls the edges of the tune back to the center. The airy drums really create a soft and personal feel throughout the soundscape, while the bass gently rolls the tune along. Oh wow, this meandering slow and bluesy jam is super tasty. It almost reminds me a little bit of The Doors, though probably more their later stuff than their earlier albums. Great tune.
“High Rise” has a really fast moving underbelly to this song in the chugging drums and fat, swirling bass, with the rhythm guitar seemingly pulling the tune along a certain route while the lead guitar lets out some bluesy riffs into the soundscape. Oh wow, this tune has evolving to nearly have some sort of major blues feel. Oh wow, this tune has a few different progressions in this bluesy instrumental jam from the band. Holy smokes, I really dig the evolution of this song, it’s evolved a whole bunch since the beginning. Sweet track.
“Rock Me Baby” has a super tasty gently rollicking blues rock feel that has a nearly caressing touch to the bluesy playing from the band. There’s a super steady, chugging sort of feel from the drums and bass that keep this tune rolling along at a super tasty pace. I really dig all the guitar parts in this one, with the rhythm contributing to the rhythm section and adding tasty accentuations from the background and the lead playing some super tasty and patient bluesy licks. Oh wow, the lead hits some sweet notes in this one. Really sweet tune.
“I Smell Trouble” comes on with some super crunchy distortion from one of the guitars before dropping into a super slick bluesy jam, with the both guitars seemingly melting into the soundscape in different ways while the tasty bass gently tugs the tune along the tracks laid out by the airy drums. Oh wow, this guitar solo part has some awesome distortion in both the lead and rhythm guitars. Holy smokes, this tune is tasty.
“Pretty Woman” starts out in a super tasty way with some absolutely delicious in the bass guitar that almost sounds like it’s going through an envelope filter with some sort of distortion to it. Holy smokes, this guitar solo part is awesome – great tone and super tasty bluesy flavors. Great tune.
“Little Girl” starts out with some smoking bluesy guitars keeping a fast paced bluesy groove with that chugging drum beat and some super flavorful bluesy piano. Wow, the piano really rollicks around super nicely while all the guitars, lead, rhythm, and bass, all play a similar rockin’ blues riff around the soundscape with a bunch of flavor. Great short track.
“The Doormouse Rides the Rails” has some super interesting flavor to the lead guitar that almost reminds me of some early Grateful Dead Jerry Garcia. This tune also features some interesting work in the rhythm section with a chugging walking bass and some sweet crashes from the cymbals bringing some sweet flavor to the track. I really dig the rhythm guitar to this one – it almost sounds like some sort of bluesy surf rock guitar for a bit. Oh wow, this tune is sweet. It almost sounds like a somewhat psychedelic, tasty bluesy surf rock instrumental tune. Oh wow, I think there’s even some little accentuations from a piano. This jam track is super sweet and sounds pretty dynamic throughout. Great tune.
“It’s All My Fault” starts out with some super tasty jazz-inflected, clean bluesy rhythm guitar chords, which are complemented super nicely by the smooth bass moving the soundscape around with some big sounds, and those airy drums that keep the tune in a bit of whirl. Oh wow, the lead guitar has some super tasty distortion with the rest of the instruments having a super clean sound in this one. Even those sweet vocals have a somewhat cleaner, somewhat more polished sound in this one, though they still get a little gritty at times and bring some great flavor to this one. Holy smokes, this jazz inflected bluesy jam is super tasty. The rhythm guitar has some super awesome tone that gets accentuated when those jazz chords get hit with a blue note. Oh wow, the bass has such a pleasant sound to it too. Great track.
“Shake ‘Em On Down” starts with some super tasty playing from the bass, drums, and piano that all coalesce into a troublemaking sort of bluesy sound that has a nearly rubbery quality to it as it bounces around. Oh wow, the sliding notes on the guitar on the opposite side of the soundscape bounce a bit off the bouncing left in a super tasty way. Oh wow, the lead guitar really gets going with some super tastily distorted licks as the rest of the band gets going faster and louder, to the point it nearly becomes a feedback-like effect in a super awesome way. Oh wow, the lead guitar part is in a different location now and the feedback sound sort of resolved to a really great part by the band. Super sweet. I really dig that low, punchy kick on the right side of the soundscape, really creating a super tasty pulsating feeling opposite the rest of the drums in the soundscape. Oh wow, this jam is building up to some super sweet, seemingly controlled feedback that adds a massive dimension to the soundscape. Oh wow, the feedback resolved super nicely to this little bluesy outro section that the band seems to be building up to another bluesy crescendo for. The band doesn’t sound like it’s going to stop for anything. Great bluesy jam to end the album, and sweet track.
Wow, this album is packed with some awesome blues rock. I barely even realized the album was almost over when the second to last song came on – I was absolutely digging those bluesy jams and got lost in the music. If you enjoy classic blues rock at all, this is an album you might want to consider checking out. I’m super stoked I checked it out tonight. If you do decide to give this one a listen, I do sincerely hope that you enjoy the listening experience at least as much as I did.
